Harley:

200 tire on 18 x 5.5″ PM rim on a Deuce
I’d like to share this knowledge with those interested in installing
a 7 5/8″ tire on a Deuce.
On this install I used a PM 18 x 5.5″ rim with the 180 tire hub. The
tire is Avon AM23, 200/55VB-18 which measures 7 19/32″ wide when
mounted. Any tire wider will not fit.
These are the OEM parts that I used for this install:
1. Axle, Dyna, 44815-00A.
2. Fender reinforcement, right, 56800-04.
3. Splash guard, 60307-00A.
4. Debris deflector, chrome, 60393-03.
Here’s the procedure:
1. Swing arm is “stretched” open 1/2″. The goal here is to get the
tire as close to the right as possible. This can be done using a 3/4″
threaded rod with 3/4″ nuts, I use a hydraulic ram for this. This is
done so that the wheel assembly is moved over to the right about 1/4″
(Harley basically did the same thing in 2004 to fit the 180 tire on
the FXSTDSEイ, they did it by reducing the caliper mounting width by
about 5/16″).
2. Custom made pulley spacer is .530″ compared to stock PM of .235″.
This provides belt clearance to tire and keeps belt in “close”
alignment (.045″ off).
3. Dyna axle is used because it is about 7/16″ longer than Deuce’s.
4. “Mushroom” axle spacer (PM) is faced off .295″ to accomodate
custom belt pulley spacer.
5. Addtional custom axle spacer for the left is .495″ because of
additional 1/2″ increase in swing arm’s width. It also provides swing
arm to pulley and pulley to belt guard clearance.
6. Upper and lower guards may need to be clearanced for tire. I do
this with a hand held 4″ grinder.
7. Right fender reinforcment is needed to provide tire clearance.
Conclusion:
1. No swing arm problems to date doing similar mods which dates back
to mid 90’s.
2. No issues with handling. For those of you concerned about wheel
alignment, look at older service manuals, the alignment tolerance is
quite large.
3. When viewed from the rear, tire looks centered. Everthing looks
stock.
I hope this helps. Included are some pictures of a 03 Deuce that was
done using these techniques.
